Goombay is een typische muziekstijl uit de Bahama's.
Het ritme is erg belangrijk. Drums, maraca's, sticks en geïmproviseerde instrumenten spelen erop los, liefst met een ritme vol syncopes.
Goombay staat ook symbool voor een evenement op de Bahama's, het zomerfestival 'Junkanoo'. Het is een culturele optocht op straat met muziek, dans en extravagante kostuums.
De deelnemers waren slaven met Afrikaanse roots. De kostuums en drum hebben dan ook veel gelijkenissen met West-Afrikaanse maskerdansen. Tijdens de kerstperiode kregen de slaven één dag vrij op de plantages...zo ontstond deze nieuwe traditie.
Tegenwoordig staan de Junkanoos symbool voor het afschaffen van slavernij.
